baleal island // portugal
Baleal owes its name to the Portuguese word Baleia- meaning whale.
What was once a central whaling village during the middle ages, now boasts more surfers than fishermen.
It’s a tiny sleepy town with 2 roads and no stoplights, and only a sandbar connects it to the continent. You can grab an ice-cream and some fresh fish from the same place you rent your surfboard, and other than beach-sand-surfers and stories of immense remains of whale bones that once littered the place, that’s pretty much all there is. Oh, and a church the size of a beach cottage, right on the lookout point. It’s a real nice place to waste your mid-term break.
